Tuesdays With Morrie Chapter 9 Summary

How It All Goes Down

The Second Tuesday: We Talk About Feeling Sorry for Yourself

  • Mitch really starts looking forward to these Tuesday chats. Things at work aren't looking better, and he's not even dreading the hassle of the plane flights to Morrie's house every week.
  • In his otherwise depressing life, Tuesdays with Morrie feel like a "cleansing rinse of human kindness" (8.3).
  • Mitch watches out for signs that Morrie's illness is getting worse and the only thing he notices is that Morrie now stays in one chair in his study rather than moving around the house.
  • Mitch asks if Morrie feels sorry for himself. Morrie admits that he does in the mornings. When he wakes up, he lets himself cry for a little bit and then focuses on the good things instead.
  • Mitch thinks about all the people he knows who feel sorry for themselves all the time.
  • Morrie says he's lucky that he has plenty of time to say goodbye.
  • Mitch offers to move Morrie from his wheelchair to his recliner, and as his picks up his friend's frail body, he feels death inside of it and freaks out, thinking that he needs to do something about it.
  • Flashback to junior year. Morrie's class is studying the way they interact with each other.
  • How are they doing this? Trust falls. Interestingly, only one girl falls like a board without flinching before she's caught.
  • Morrie points out the difference between her and everyone else. By closing her eyes she blocked out everything around her, and in doing so, removed her fear.
